Volunteers of America of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho is an innovative nonprofit that operates dozens of programs throughout the Inland Northwest. It is a locally managed and governed organization that is part of the national Volunteers of America movement. Across the country, Volunteers of America helps more than two million people each year. More than 400 organizations in the region are part of the network, which is committed to helping people in need.
Homeward Bound Project
The Volunteers of America Spokane Homeward Bount Project is a new program that helps those who are homeless or experiencing homelessness in Spokane transition into a new community. The project aims to reunite homeless people with supportive networks in their new home communities. The program provides funds for plane tickets, food cards, and hotel rooms. Participants can expect to spend $1,000 to $3,000 to relocate, depending on their needs.
The new Hope House will offer women a safe place to stay away from the street. No matter their chemical dependency or mental health condition, the home-like atmosphere will provide women a sense of dignity. The project’s goal is to open by the end of 2020.
In Spokane, the organization has expanded its services with the support of community partners. Volunteers are needed to help the organization reach its goal of assisting homeless and low-income youth. The organization provides meals and snacks to youth and is also a hub for social services and advocacy.
Providence Health Care will provide financial support to Volunteers of America Hope House, a women’s homeless shelter in Spokane. The shelter provides warm meals and beds to homeless women. It also donates hygiene items. Approximately 250 to 350 women are served each year. The Hope House was founded in 1997 after the Spokane serial murders of women.
The Volunteers of America Hope House has two locations, Hope Manor I and Hope Manor II. Each offers a variety of services and is located in downtown Spokane. In addition, Hope Manor II features a campus-style community with supportive services and housing options. The facilities offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments as well as four-bedroom townhomes.
Volunteers of America provides shelter, case management, and information about local services. This organization helps individuals achieve self-sufficiency and rebuild their lives. Their mission is to bring hope and dignity to every person they serve.
Crosswalk Youth Shelter
Volunteers of America Spokane’s crosswalk youth shelter provides emergency shelter and life-changing programs for youth with complex needs. The organization serves youth with complicated personal histories, including addiction and family conflict, as well as mental health issues. They’re also at high risk for suicide, depression, and sexual abuse.
Crosswalk is the oldest youth shelter in Eastern Washington, serving about 100 homeless young people each year. Its mission is to help these young people regain hope and develop self-responsibility. It offers services such as counseling, medical care, and substance abuse treatment, as well as transitional housing. It also serves meals, snacks, and other necessities for its guests.
In addition to the Crosswalk youth shelter, VOA is in the process of purchasing the former Spokane Clean Air building and turning it into a young adult shelter. The goal is to create a homeless center outside of downtown so that it can serve a wider demographic. The new facility will also be more accessible to the Spokane Transit Authority’s planned City Line rapid bus service that will link downtown and Spokane Community College.
