Volunteers learn about all the things found underwater, how to interact with sight and develop public speaking skills. “I’ve wanted to do biology since I was three years old,” says Dorothy Smith, a volunteer at the aquarium. Smith volunteers there every Friday. “My favorite part of the aquarium is the touch tank,” he says. He says the best part of his job is meeting people from all over the country and hearing what visitors have to say about the sea creatures they encounter. . “They asked ‘can you eat it?’ Yes, you can– but maybe you shouldn’t.” Volunteers do more than learn about marine biology and how to interact with the public. Some get the opportunity to work directly in the aquarium. Conley says volunteers can “work on dive teams. They’re scuba certified and they go down and clean up our habitat. So without volunteers this place wouldn’t be Here.” The head of the volunteer program says the aquarium offers young people a chance to see if marine biology is something they want to pursue. “It’s an opportunity to gain experience which isn’t so easy when you’re young. And by the time you get to college, a lot of people have already volunteered or have experience, so it really gives our youth an opportunity,” they said.
